Lonely? It all depends on your perception. -

” ‘Loneliness is the discrepancy between your achieved and desired level of social contact, and that has important implications,’ Segrin says. ‘The portrait of a lonely person is very difficult to paint because what is really important is what is in your head.’ “

So, we have a holiday assignment.

It’s a mini research project on methods of research. I was really excited about it at first but now that I’ve gotten started, I’ve realised that research is a bitch. You never get the information you really need. Instead, you get millions of other irrelevant points which you end up adding into your assignments and eventually, you get sidetracked.

Some case studies we’ve been given to research on are:

  1. Asylums - Erving Goffman
  2. Street Corner Society - William Foote Whyte
  3. Tea Room Trade - Laud Humphreys
  4. Doing the Business - Dick Hobbs
  5. Learning to Labour - Paul Willis
  6. Endless Pressure - Ken Pryce
  7. Early Learning - Cecile Wright
  8. Unification Church - Eileen Barker
  9. Glasgow Gangs - James Patrick

We need at least 10 so we can pick a few from the list given then pick a few more of our own.

So far, I think I’m done with research on Erving Goffman and also have a brief idea of the Stanford Prison Experiment led by Philip Zimbardo.

If you have no life and want to help me out, iNiks@live.com.

I will love you forever, I swear. Bye now.

I got a D (overall) for my second Sociology assesment.

I deserve to die in a raging fire.

This is the article that I was talking about in my previous post.
Got it off contexts.org, great site for those who love sociology!

Today’s Sociology class was interesting, to say the least.

I was on the verge of tears. It just ruined my whole day. No, no, Sociology didn’t ruin my day, patriarchal ideology did.

We were told to bring magazine cut-outs, pictures, videos, texts, anything that portrayed women in an empowering or, in contrast, a subordinate role.

A friend of mine brought a women’s health magazine. We scanned it briefly, looked pretty normal. Then we put on our sociologist thinking caps and looked at it critically.

The first page, a business woman. We thought, oh, empowering role. What we failed to notice was that, despite her smart outfit, she was leaning back clumsily on a sofa, talking on the phone. Which implies that women are chatty and at home and have nothing better to do.

We looked at several pictures. Almost always, the male in the picture was captured in full (and fully clothed, at that) while the female was always slightly out of the shot (and always almost half naked). WHY?

And then we came across THE article, the one that will forever piss me off.

VAGINAL TIGHTENING SURGERY. ‘To tighten the vaginal muscles for maximum pleasure.’

“I feel like a woman now.”

“I did this for myself, because I love my husband.”

You did it for yourself? Fucking bull. All I could say after that was GO FUCKING DIE.

What are they publishing these days? Is this really all that matters?

We read another piece of text.

“How to be the perfect wife.”

One of the tips was to always have dinner ready when he came home.

Another one was to never question him, because he was ‘tired after a long day of work’.

Yet another was this, and this one pissed me off the most: “Whatever you have to say, wait and listen to him first, because what he has to say is more important.”

WHAT.

EXCUSE ME.

Ugh.

I don’t hate men, I just hate patriarchy. I hate the people who publish such articles. STOP BRAINWASHING US, OK, NOT ALL OF US TAKE SOCIOLOGY AND HENCE NOT ALL OF US CAN SEE PAST YOUR FUCKING SCHEMING WAYS. GO FUCKING DIE IN A RAGING FIRE, I AM NOT EVEN KIDDING.

Also.

Sociology classes are a chance for Fiqah, Sakina and I to talk about Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Sophia Bush respectively.

“I FEEL SO GAY.”  — Fiqah.

“It’s OK, we’re all bi to a certain extent. I mean, LOOK AT THOSE WOMEN, OK!” — Me.

Yes. On a completely different sociological note, I cannot wait to study suicide and talk about Durkheim’s theories (my favourite) again.
